Kunga Tamang was born in Darjeeling, India. He completed the Sakya curriculum of Tibetan grammar, and Buddhist rituals and scriptures. He obtained his Kachupa degree (equivalent to a BA in Buddhist Philosophy), and his Loppon degree (equivalent to an MA) in 2007. He spent the next five years following graduation traveling to various countries in Asia and Europe representing Sakya college for Buddhist teachings and fundraising.
From July 2013 to October 2020, Kunga Tamang served as a senior lecturer in higher Buddhist Studies at Sakya college for Nuns covering all major fields of Buddhist studies. He was greatly admired by his colleagues and revered by his students for his kind, simple, and calm demeanor. Kunga Tamang also worked closely with His Holiness the 43rd Sakya Trizin Gyana Vajra Rinpoche assisting with Vajrakilaya tours and rituals in Asia during this time. Kunga Tamang is fluent in Chinese.
Kunga Tamang was advised by His Holiness the Sakya Trichen, and His Holiness the 43rd Sakya Trizin Gyana Vajra Rinpoche to continue serving the Dharma Community through Minnesota Sakya Thupten Dargye Ling assisting Khenpo Thupten Gongphel, and the Los Angeles Sakya Center — Tsechen Chokhor Ling.
